My Dad is Dying & I’m Grateful!
My dad is dying and I’m grateful.
Grateful THAT my dad is dying? Not at all.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to spend these last moments with him. As I sit by his bed with tears streaming down my face, I understand that so many of us depart from our loved ones by receiving an unexpected phone call. But not I. I have the advantage of knowing that the phone call is coming soon. In fact, I may very well be the one making the phone call. So in these moments before the phone rings, I get to love and laugh with my dad. I get to help him do the things that he can no longer do. I get to remind him of memories and watch his face light up. I get to wipe his tears when his reality overwhelms him. I get to share in his tears when my pain echoes his. My dad is one of the smartest and funniest people that I’ve ever known. While I watch his mind and body break down, he clings on to that sense of humor that’s ingrained in him. Just like always, I’m guaranteed a laugh every time I talk to him, even in hospice care. Thank you God for the joy that radiates through that room and the privilege just to be in the room. I’m grateful, so grateful! While losing a loved one, especially a parent is never easy, God’s peace and joy are real. I can confidently say that God is carrying me through this difficult time in my life. I have unexplainable peace. You too can experience the magnitude of His love. No matter what the situation is, it’s not bigger than God or what He can do even in the midst of that situation. Lord, I lift up every heavy, broken or weary heart to You. I pray that You would comfort and strength them. You said that You’re near to the broken-hearted so I pray that You would make Your presence known to them. I pray for Your love to surround them as well as people who love them to surround them. I pray that they would see the light even in the darkest of places. Let the light and the hope of Christ shine in their lives in Jesus’ name. Amen. <3 always, Your sister in Christ, Kyra Lanae
